Went with Ed and Larry to the Island, this past Wednesday. Our main target was an Orchard oriole that has been hanging around the Oak Bay neigbourhood, since November 5. Daylight arrived just as the ferry was reaching Active Pass, allowing Ed and I to spot some Common murres and Marbled murrelets. Within five minutes of arriving at the stakeout site, the oriole showed up. She didn't sit still for long, however, and soon disappeared for about half an hour. Finally, the bird reappeared and gave us (and other birders) incredibly leisurely views: Orchard oriole by Joel Schmidt, on Flickr In addition to the oriole, we also had Surfbirds, Black oystercatchers, and a Rhinoceros auklet down at the waterfront. Though we dipped on Blue-grey gnatcatcher at Uplands Park, we did get a Northern shrike at Island View Beach for our final highlight of the day. The eBird report: ebird.org/tripreport/170389
