Right after Nova Scotia, my parents and I had an amazing tour of Newfoundland (aka "the Rock") from June 14 to July 2. Though it wasn't a birding trip per se, I still managed to fit a lot of birding in. The weather ranged from warm and sunny to cold and wet; typical Newfoundland weather. At a campground in Gros Morne National Park, we were serenaded almost constantly by an American redstart that checked us out as we were settling into our site. My first lifer on the island was this Blue-headed vireo, just down the road from our campsite: Blue-headed vireo by Joel Schmidt, on Flickr We did a lot of driving around, looking at various coastal hamlets. One day, my dad and I happened upon a Short-eared owl, which was very unexpected. During a boat tour out of St Anthony, I got my lifer Black-legged kittiwakes and Northern gannets. An attempt for Rock ptarmigan on a barren mountaintop, off the Trans-Canada east of Corner Brook, was unsuccessful. We camped at Cape Bonavista for 2 or 3 nights, and were really excited to discover the Atlantic puffin colony that's there. Very nice Joel. Our Group went up the ski hill at Corner Brook and at the mountain top I did see Rock Ptarmigan. At St. Anathony we went Whale watching and saw Black-legged Kittiwakes. Was not a bird watching trip either.
