The crew and I went across to the Island for the day, on Monday. Our first stop was at the sewage ponds in Duncan, in search of the Tufted duck that's been hanging out there for the past month. We found that, and some Iceland gulls, within minutes of arriving at the place . For Larry, the duck was a lifer and the gulls were a year bird. Both were lifers for me. Though we looked hard, we couldn't find any of the recently-reported American black ducks. We did find, however, a couple of Snow geese hanging out with a barnyard goose at a farm pond. Lastly, we swung by the Nanaimo area. In addition to about a dozen Harbour seals, we also had 3 species of loon including Yellow-billed, at the Little Qualicum estuary.
