Fraser Valley Birders: For those that may not subscribe to other birding listserves, there is presently a Litlle Stint hanging around the Iona Sewage Ponds. I got to see this rare Euasian species today in a group of approximately 10 birders. It comes into the ponds on a rising tide, and for two days in a row has been found in the SW pond. According to the local experts, it is a fairly pale example of the species, so can be difficult to pick out amongst the Western, and Least Sandpipers; so if you go, unless you are an experienced shorebirder, bring your guide, or hope that there are many eyes to scan through the flock. Cheers, Thor

Thanks for the heads up. This is a great bird for BC. It may be interesting for some to know that 'stint' is the British term for 'peep' sandpipers (like our least, Western, semipalmated etc sandpipers who are 'peeps'). So I guess one from North America could call that guy a 'Little Sandpiper' while a person in Britain may call our Western Sandpiper 'Western Stint'. It doesnt work that way though for such species, which is good as it would get confusing! Sadly I wont be able to get out for the next while to see this guy, which is probably ok as in stupidly hot temperatures like this, I prefer to bird in my Speedo and I wouldnt want to scare off/spoil it for other people coming out looking for this guy. ;D

Gord: Along the same lines, apparently a Little Stint is the most common Stint in Europe, and, if you read Cocker's book Tales of a Tribe, there are some birders who would fly from an area where a bird is extremely common, like the Little Stint in Europe to North America to see the same bird where it is considered rare. Are we birders a strange lot? Maybe, some??? Thor

Re: Thingyer; I see there is an automatic editing device if a person's name happens to come close to a word that is not supposed to be used in polite company!! Interesting. Thor

Yes, it's a bit of an unnecessary tool for this site!
I think I turned it off. If so, post the name of the author again as Im interested.
Ill test it out.

Duh, I see it automatically uncensors words when I shut off the censor and I can see the author's name now.
