Sorry for the large size--you may have answered this before Gord, but how can I make the pictures medium size?
Last week I spent a couple of days on the Gulf Islands--one on Galiano, and one on Mayne respectively, and then 4 days on Whistler. I did not see a whole wack of birds but there were some highlights.
Close to where we stayed on Galiano I found a pair of pileated woodpeckers--I attempted a picture.
I found out digital zoom doesn't work that great!
The other highlight was seeing purple martins on Mayne. They were a first for me, and apparently were nesting in the nest boxes set up over the water for the first time also. I only managed to see females feeding young.
Other birds on the islands included:
Great Blue Heron
Bald eagles
Belted kingfishers--lots ( at least 4 seen from the Galiano ferry terminal)
Red-breasted nuthatches
Song sparrows
American goldfinches--looked like juveniles
Whistler also had a few highlights.
4 Blue Grouse --at least 2 still had down, indicating they were this year's batch, although they were pretty well near adult size
Townsend's Warbler ;D--male
Several common mergansers
Oregon juncos
Northern Flicker
American Pipits
Stellar's Jays
Immature White-crowned sparrow
Crows
Mallards
House sparrows
And some frustrating little birds that were most likely kinglets (but they moved too fast for me to get a good look at them ), and then a small flock of slightly larger birds that acted a lot kinglets (meaning I didn't get a good look at them). Unfortunately the only notable marking I could see was a large amount of white on the underside of the tail. Their unique calls drew my attention to them in the first place.
I was also 30 feet from this black bear, on the corner of the 99 and Lorimer Rd, the main road that goes through the village. Closest I've ever been to a wild bear . Notice it has a collar and an ear tag indicating it was tracked and/or studied, I guess?
Well, that's my report--not much of a birding trip, but at least I got purple martin out of the deal. --Jeff
