The Fraser Valley Bald Eagle festival is over but there are still lots of salmon and Bald Eagles along the Harrison River and the Nicomen Slough. Beautiful day to be out today, not the best photography (too bright) weather but still the eagles at Harrison Mills were plentiful and active. Not lots of fights, they are mostly stuffed and put up only a token fight over a salmon claimed by another bird. I actually saw a Bald Eagle help a salmon going upstream at Nicomen slough a couple days ago, it had swam into a clump of grass and was struggling. The eagle actually gently pulled it back out with its beak and let it go and it swam upstream. The eagle did not pursue it at all, the things we see when we do not have a camera, oh wait I did! Here is the image. Helping Beak by Nick, on Flickr The rain yesterday did raise the water level at the Harrison River and I suspect most dying fish were washed down stream. But I saw more eagles around Eagle Point Park and the Chehalis flats than I have ever seen. Out on the exposed bars on the river the eagle population was less, but they seemed to be roosting further back from the river. I was able to watch about 100 birds coming off the mountain side and slowly working there way down to fly over the river and out to either the sand bars or to perch in the trees on the shore. Still lots of eagles around by Nick, on Flickr The short term weather forecast is dry so the river is likely to drop making viewing opportunities greater. I got "eyed" by a couple birds today but they were not too nervous about it. I see you puny human! by Nick, on Flickr I have spent many hours at Nicomen Slough and Harrison Mills this year and I have been able to watch and learn new things every day I visited. Get out and bird!
