We have just returned from southern Alberta and Sask. It looks like we weren't the only ones touring out there (John, Bert). We had a great encounter with a Badger. Here is the link to the first blog; lenanddiansadventures.blogspot.com

Awesome post! My wife and I spent a day in the west block once about 10 years ago in August (not the best time of year for birds) and it was fantastic!!
How were the ticks?

You are an old Saskatchewan guy aren't you? Ticks were there. We would strip down when we got back to the trailer and found a few.

I love that place Len. I've been there twice but never made it to the east block. Based on the visits you've done what would you say is prime time for bird activity there? did you see any Lark Buntings or Longspurs?

Lots of Lark Bunting but only a few Chestnut-collared Longspurs, Murray. May is probably best but it can be a bit cool. Sharp-tailed Grouse on leks in May. Sage Grouse are on leks in April but they are endangered and it is not advisable to even look for them for fear of being prosecuted.

I never did too much local birding when I was living there though - partially because I was too busy with school, etc. I definitely regret not spending more time birding in Saskatchewan and getting to Grasslands more than once!

Great footage Bert. I'm thinking that the magpies were trying to grab one of the owlets and the parents are defending them. Was this in the west block?

Murray! They may have been trying to take an Owlet. I'm thinking they were trying to steal the rodent which was just outside the nest entrance!
