Tonight I missed the opportunity to join Gord at the wetlands by only a few minutes (I was taking my son for a stroller walk down the road and was only minutes from Gord without a cell phone....we were probably within yelling distance without knowing it....)
Well, you win some, you lose some....I will try tomorrow morning for Mr. Scarlet. Anyway, my brother from China is staying here and I was showing him my BirdJam Ipod. He decides he wants to try it out with some birds and steps out onto the back porch in the dark. He leans back in and asks, "What would be a good owl to try to get to respond?" I am sitting inside occupied with something else, look up and say, "Probably a Barred is your best bet". I then resume my work. In the mean time, Tom plays the Barred call for a couple of seconds and opens the sliding patio door again, "Hey, Dave, something responded!". I joined him in the dark on the porch. He plays it again for just a couple of seconds and a Barred Owl comes crashing through the bush and lands in the closest tree to the house, about 25 feet from our deck. Total ipod playing time was only a few seconds!
Anyway, I bolted back inside in search of a camera, flashlight, etc...and after some running around the house, ended up with this.
Mr. Barred sat there for several minutes before he (or she) was sure that whatever was making those noises had left or been scared off. It then flew back into the wetlands.
Well, being a new yard bird, it sort of helped make up for the missed call about Mr. Scarlet. I also learned that the new ipod can be used to call owls.
