Until I read this article in Living Bird from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology I had no idea about the importance of bird-friendly coffee: www.allaboutbirds.org/in-colombia-shade-grown-coffee-sustains-songbirds-and-people-alike/The monoculture of coffee that has occurred in Central America has had a huge impact on bird life. There is a push towards shade grown coffee. Sun grown coffee produces more beans of course but requires monoculture with pesticides - obviously not good for birds. Shade grown coffee allows polyculture and requires few or no pesticides due to the attraction of bug eating birds. In addition the coffee is said to taste better (I personally cannot stand the taste of coffee so I can't comment) . Obviously there is a somewhat higher cost but a very good reason to spend more money on coffee. My wife is a big coffee drinker (and nature lover) so I presented her the above information and she agreed to try some different coffees. I did some research and found this company in Ontario that will ship the coffee (ground or whole bean): birdsandbeans.ca/I ordered three bags and my wife has tried one of them, which she says is quite good. The bags shipped within a week or so and shipping is now free with orders over $45. For any regular home coffee drinkers I would strongly encourage you to check out this option!

I'm with you, Randy, as I gave up drinking coffee as a university student, many years ago, and coffee has no attraction for me. I would strongly endorse support for shade-grown coffee sources, and also for fair-trade coffee, in which distributors ensure that the actual coffee farmers get a fair price for their product and their business is not exploited but treated with respect. Our choices can make a difference.

In follow-up to my post from a couple years ago - in the most recent Living Bird Magazine from the Cornell Lab: www.allaboutbirds.org/coffee-made-in-the-shade-can-be-more-profitable-thanks-to-birds/I continue to order all my wife's coffee from Birds and Beans and she really enjoys it. Also it's free shipping if you order a certain amount at a time as I mentioned above. We order a bunch and keep it in the freezer until she is ready for the next bag.
