Much to my amazement I spotted this bird on my walk on Sumas Mountain. I initially thought it was a Bluebird (I have never seen one of those) and then Nick suggested it was an Indigo Bunting (that was even more surprising). Why is it here? Too bad so far away and so great to see it ever so briefly. I watched a Black Bear and saw a Bobcat on the same evening... Thrilling... all of it!

Gabi Open your Flickr page with the photo. To the lower right of the photo there are several icons, select the one that looks like an arrow pointing right. The box that opens select BBcode, the lower line select medium size and the upper line highlight the phrase and copy it and then paste it to your posting on Fraser Valley Birding. Hopeful that helps.

Can you give us a location?

Great find, Gabi. It's been a little while since we've had one of those in the Fraser Valley area. Good job getting a photo too. A good chance it's on territory so you may see it again!

HI - All those anxious to spot this bird.... I went back this evening from 6:30 - 8:30 pm and did not hear or see the Bunting.... I spotted it on Monday evening, in an area that is under development so the ability to go into the area during the day is likely limited. Even since I walked into the area on Monday, huge mounds of dirt have been trucked in close to the area that I spotted it... likely you would only be able to check this area out after normal working hours. The area in question is East of Whatcom Road at the end of Florence Drive and then you have to hike in a short ways on a very crushed rock roadway, up a small hill and then down again.... I spotted the bird on Monday evening for about 20 secs on a small tree and then it flew West and then I lost sight of it.
I felt quite sad tonight when I was in the area.... clearly it will all be developed and it has sat in a certain state for quite some time and now they seem to be gearing up again.... there are quite a few birds in the area that I saw this evening (I was happy about that) - lots of American Goldfinch, Robins, Tanagers, Sparrows, Towhee, Swallows (there is a nest in one of the metal pipes of abandoned fencing), Vireo, MacGillvray's Warbler, Flycatcher (I think Willow), Hummingbirds; also heard Thrush, Grosbeak and Common Yellowthroat. An expert ear likely would hear others....Turkey Vultures were also overhead.

Thank you Gabi for sharing the location. I checked it out very early this morning before any workers on the construction site arrived and I did find it eventually. It is tiny, not much bigger than an Annas Hummingbird and flies and sings a lot like the Lazuli Bunting. It is a construction site where they are tearing out nature to put in big houses on tiny lots. I was there before 5:30 a.m. and I was the only one on the site except as Gabi mentioned many songbirds, the sun had just come up so there was lots of singing going on. I have spent a lot of time looking for Lazuli Buntings and I have been fairly successful at it even so it did take some time to locate. If it had not been singing I would never have spotted it, a dark bird in a high contrast light is not easy to spot. I only saw it land twice and then I lost it. I stayed not much more than an hour and by that time the sun was up and a lot of the song birds were disappearing. Indigo Bunting by Nick, on Flickr

Its still there - observed by several birders this evening... I finally left just before 8pm - lots of dirt being moved around right in the area (lots of habitat being destroyed!)

Jamie and I put in a solid effort this morning with no luck. Nice to have met you, Gabi. Bert is taking a look when we were leaving so may get lucky.

Early Sunday morning I went to look for the Indigo Bunting again and had no luck. It was a lot quieter than it had been a few days earlier, as if a lot of birds had moved on elsewhere. There was still a couple of Anna's Hummingbirds hanging out behind the huge pile of soil. I heard a Barred Owl hooting out in the distance a couple times, shortly to be heard by a flock of crows making a fuss. A woodpecker was working on a tree somewhere up the mountain. There were some white-crowned Sparrows and an unknown pair of Swallows. The best thing was a large deer with a big set of antlers which I was completely unable to photograph for some reason. Since I was there a few days ago I could see they had added to the pile of soil and there was more equipment on the site and the road bed looked to have been flattened even more. Perhaps all the extra work noise convinced the Indigo Bunting to move on.
