Have been getting quite a few chickadees, until I noticed today either House Finches, Purple Finches, or perhaps Cassins? I am leaning towards the House Finch, as the red on the head is also quite prevalent on the neck, some of the breast. As stated, I live in an apartment, and although I have a small "patio" the birds must be either quite brave, or hungry, third floor facing south--Al

Hi Al, and welcome!! All three finches are found in the area, although the Cassin's is the most uncommon of the three, but entirely possible feeder visitor. I think you're right with the house finch though. Purple finch and Cassin's finch males colouring is more of a wine-purple red while the house finch is usually a brighter red. Location/extent of the colouring on the males, face pattern, streaks on sides and breasts and also undertail covert streaking are also good clues to tell the three apart. When I get back, I think there's a few pictures of house and purple finches on this site that Ill post a link to.

Now that I look at the pics "side by side" as it were, I have had the Purple Finches here, 2 males (bickering) and 1 female. The last 2 days the wind has been so bad up here, and on the exposed side, that the seed from the feeder has unfortunately almost all blown away! I will replenish of course, but when the wind stops! I have my feeder suspended from the overhang, good for close viewing, but the wind blows the feeder about and has finally scared the birds off.
