Hello birders,
just wondering if anybody knows if we have any resident bat species in the area. Carolynn and I were driving home tonight, and what we both thought we saw, was a bat flying briefly in front of the car.

Brent: We have a couple, of what I think are Little Brown Bats, that roost underneath our eavestroughs in the summer, but they are long gone by now. Are you sure it wasn't a Nicola Valley Common Poorwhill; ( just kidding- I think ). Thor

Hi Brent We have 17 species of bat in BC (more than any other Province) - not all of them occur in the Lower Mainland. Some of them migrate but a number of them hibernate here and use caves, mines and tree holes. Usually if you see a bat out hunting in cold weather or the winter it can mean that the bat's fat reserves are depleted and this wakens it up from its torpor. Cheers

Hi Mac,
interesting to know some of them stick around. I was thinking that, possibly, because of the quick rise in termperatures over the last few days, some of the bats may have been a bit fooled. I believe it went from one degree to 14 in a matter of hours. We also noticed on the drive hundreds of moths hovering above the road probably due to the warm weather. Possibly the bats saw quick meal to increase the fat stores.
Thanks for the info,
Brent
