On Saturday, me, my dad, and my siblings went to Cheam Lake with the Young Field Naturalists. At the parking lot was a singing Western Wood-pewee. I watched a Tree Swallow using a nest box that was put up for them. There was a family of chickadees using a different nest box as well. We walked the loop trail first. The highlights were a Virginia Rail, a beautiful male Bullock's Oriole, a baby Marsh Wren, and a few Swainson's Thrushes. We heard a Willow Flycatcher 'sneezing' at the Beaver Pond. There were a few mosquitoes near the bridge. Heading back the way we came on the Loop Trail, we found a Black-tailed Deer with a fawn!! There were a couple of people who were VERY close to it. The two deer ran towards us and then disappeared into the reeds. A few minutes later, we saw it swim across the wetlands! The fawn swam with only its head peeking out of the water. Its amazing that the fawn is able to swim as soon as it can walk. Here's the fawn running away Heading into the water A poor pic of a Swainson's Thrush.

Nice to hear the Marsh Wren chicks are hatching, they're cute. Good find on the Rail. The fawn is adorable. Good work on the photos and report. Bruce and Joanne
