Meant to share some butterfly sightings.
On February 21 at a stoplight in Sardis I saw two butterflies, one appearing to be chasing the other, fly past. They looked and flew like Tortoiseshell to me. Is this a species that hibernates over winter possibly? I didnt think they were an early emerging species from cocoon.
On February 28 what looked like a Cabbage White butterfly was checking out the crocuses and violets. Another species I wouldnt expect to see early? Mourning Cloak are usually the first I see in the spring.
With such a warm late winter I guess maybe it isnt surprising to see some abnormalities?

John, I took a quick look. Audubon has a Field Guide to North American Butterflies for $5.79.
As for dragonflies, I only noticed ones for Europe.
And I saw my first Mourning Cloak of the spring yesterday up the Chilliwack River Valley.

I'm a bit late with this but all three Tortoiseshells over winter as adults and the early white would be a Margined White. Denis
