Does anybody have any idea what this bird might be We saw it at Tunkwa Lake, right down at the edge of the water, in the reeds. We had heard an unusal call in the area and were sneaking in trying to see what had made it when I spotted this bird. I snapped two quick pictures, this being the better although they were almost identical and then it disappeared. It didn't fly, it just disappeared back into the reeds. At the same time my husband spotted a Sora (which had made the call) and we turned to taking pictures of that. There were a few Yellow Headed Blackbirds in the immediate area, also Marsh Wrens. The bird was about Blackbird size, in other words, it wasn't a small bird. We returned to the same area several more times but never saw it again. Kathy

Sure looks like a blackbird to me too. You can see at his gape (at the base of the beak where it opens) that it is a young bird not too long out of the nest. Young yellow-headed blackbird? I dont think it's a red-winged by the lack of streaks. Ive found that many young birds make weird sounds until they figure out how they are supposed to sound. Ive gone on many a chase after such birds!

A freind of mine was checking this website and sent me a picture of an identical looking bird that she had taken. We came to the conclusion that it was a fledgling Brewer's Blackbird although when I look at the illustrations of young birds in the Sibleys guide, there are no young blackbirds of any type that look like this. I've seen juvenile Brewer's Blackbirds and I know they aren't all dark but a mixtue of dark and light but don't know if they start dark and become light or start light and become dark, although I would suspect the later since the adults, at least the males, are black.
Still a mystery. Kathy
