Since there are not very many exciting discoveries being posted these days, I will give everyone something to look at. Here is a finch that seems to have distinct streaking. The other female House Finches have more blurry streaks on their belly. Is it usual for a House Finch to have crisp streaking? Could this be a female Purple Finch? Dave

I'd say that was a female Purple Finch - they usually have a olive colored sort of wash over the brown and you can see that in this bird, especially on the wing. They also have a fairly distinct white strip over the eye which doesn't show up in this bird. I have noticed an increase in the number's of Purple Finch in the last week or so, am getting more Purple Finch than House Finch at the moment.

I agree with you both. That's a female purple finch. Kathy's right, usually they do have a bit more of a facial pattern.
Ive been hearing lots of males singing last week or two.
