I've always liked seeing birds, but this year I've started to purposefully look and take photos. (I'm trying out my friend's camera while saving up for my own, so I hope to learn about what type of camera and lenses would be best too.) I'm a newly single mother, and my daughter seems to really enjoy birding too. She's the one who spotted our first woodpecker by hearing it!
We've been out twice so far, to the Heron Reserve. Just short walks around and hanging out in the various blinds. I'll show you some of what we've seen already. I don't know what a couple of them are, so please feel free to let me know, or correct any that I get wrong!
Our first trip, we saw what I think is a Double-crested Cormorant.
The next day, there were two!
Back on the first day, we saw a Kingfisher doing it's thing. It caught two fish while we watched, just bombed right into the water! It was pretty far away and in lots of screening branches, so this is the best I could do. From what I gather, this would be a Belted Kingfisher?
We saw all kinds of ducks and whatnot that I'm still sorting out. Then I heard a new song and spotted this fluffy little one. Can you let me know what it is?
We saw two Great Blue Herons, of course.
Heard this one too... someone walking by said it was a Northern Flicker?
Then on to my favourites - the little guys! We saw a handful of Rufous-sided Towhees.
Lots of Juncos. The poster there said this would likely be an Oregon Junco - is that right?
So then is this a female of the same species, or something else entirely?
Plenty of Black-capped Chickadees.
Then this little guy, who was very fun to watch... what kind of woodpecker is it?
I love the little forest birds, but after seeing the photos that you folks have put up of various owls - I would LOVE to see some of those! Just beautiful! I was thrilled to find this forum and I hope to learn plenty about Birding here!
