I know a few members would like to find this species.
Lately this fall Ive been running into them every time Ive been on a gravel road that isnt too busy vehicle-wise. I suspect that they had a very good year with the dry summer as it seems a very wet spring or summer seems to lower nesting success. Ive come across small flocks of 3 or 4 even!
Morning and evening is your best bet, but Ive been seeing them all day too. They come out to the gravel road for the gravel for their crops.
Cruising along a quiet gravel road should produce, especially in the morning. Try Tamihi FSR or better yet, the bench road you drive to get to Cheam Ridge or Foley Lake. You dont need to go up the rough road, just stay on the main road that more or less follows the river. A car will have no problems on these roads.
Others may have suggestions of good places to look as well.
Good luck!
