While searching the Throne Cliffs above Oliver for birds, I was spotted by this fellow. Never seen a Yellow-bellied Racer before, and apparently, they are on the endangered list. This one reared up at me and rattled his head sideways at great speed. I said, "Aren't you supposed to imitate a rattler by shaking the other end? No wonder you are endangered". "or ... being spring and all, I hope that is not a mating dance!". Best leave that one alone.

Very nice sighing, Ken.
The western subspecies of Racer (Western Yellow-bellied Racer) is not considered endangered but is considered "of Special Concern" (federal designation) and provincially it is blue listed.
In BC blue listed means "...considered to be of Special Concern (formerly Vulnerable) in British Columbia. ... particularly sensitive or vulnerable to human activities or natural events. Blue-listed taxa are at risk, but are not Extirpated, Endangered or Threatened." (e-fauna BC site)
Still a very good sighting!

Ken: Great shots of this little guy. It's also B.C.'s fastest snake. They don't call it a racer for nothing. I saw one last week at the Desert Centre near Osoyoos. One minute it was there, the next minute, gone!! Cheers, Thor
