Just went for a walk over to Eagle Point. There were 3 Shorebirds over there, also a Killdeer. The Shorebirds were about Killdeer size but 'plumper'. Couldn't get a good look and could only get this 'far away' photo. Kathy Sorry....I just can't seem to get it to work....guess I'll have to re-read the instructions.

Hi Kathy
Photobucket has changed AGAIN. Grrr. Now, instead of right clicking, highlighting and doing all that, you just have to click on it and it says "copied" in yellow. Then you go and paste in to your message and now can bypass putting the [ img ] in. I have to go update the directions. I fixed it for you though.
As to what these shorebirds are, a first guess would be dowitchers?

Hi, folks.
My first impression was dowitchers, too. But it's only a guess, although there aren't too many other shorebird species of that size, shape and behaviour likely to be around here in January.
If they are dowitchers, long-billed would be the only reasonable possibility this time of year.

Thanks Gord. My guess had been Dowitchers too. Went back today with better binoculars and camera and of course couldn't find them.

They look like Dunlin. I think the underparts are too pale for Dowitcher and show no markings. I would expect to see some sign of spotting or barring on the under parts if they were Dowitchers.

Boy, dunlin are sure a strong possibility. I actually lean more towards that than dowitchers now!
They have been seen in the area each winter.

I agree.....Dunlin makes more sense. When I saw them I felt they were larger than Dunlin but that is hard to judge, especially at a distance. I thought they were more Dowitcher size but they didn't have the typical feeding action of a Dowitcher and Dunlin have been in the area at this time of the year before. I'll keep taking better binoculars and my SLR camera over there for the next while in hopes they will show up again.
My husband bought me 'The Shorebird Guide' yesterday. Wow! not sure if it is going to hinder or help me with shorebird ID!
