Yesterday evening the boys and I went for a quick shopping trip at Superstore in Chilliwack. As I was getting them out of their seats, I saw a little hawk land on the light standard. I couldnt tell if it was a Cooper's or sharp-shinned at the time but only that it one or the other. As we were ready to go into the store, the little hawk (an immature Cooper's) blasted past us and landed on the shopping carts a little ways over. The boys were excited as I for a closer look as the little hawk prowled around on top of the buggies; the dozen or so house sparrows hiding underneath no doubt his reason to be there. Ive seen little hawks walk into bush piles or climb on top to spook prey out of hiding so they can catch them as they fly to new cover. These sparrows were too smart to leave their cover, but the hawk sure tried. We stood about 20 feet away and watched. OF COURSE NO CAMERA!!! You could even see the big heavy legs of a Cooper's we were so close. (Sharp-shinned hawk's legs are more pencil like) Soon it tired of waiting for the sparrows to fly, so it went off, checked out things in the gas bar quickly and landed in the trees closer to Future Shop. A real urban hawk!
