Did a little birding in Downe's Bowl, in Abbotsford, this afternoon. Very quiet but did managed to find two female Pine Grosbeaks. Otherwise quiet: Varied Thrush, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Red-tailed Hawk (one each) and two NW Crows. Good birding, John Vooys

Wow, the year for pine grosbeaks!
Should be more than a few found on the upcoming Christmas Bird Counts.

Pine Grosbeak would be a lifer for me - #110 to be exact. I am tempted to run out to Downes Bowl right now. Wouldn't you know, just when I don't go for a couple weeks, there's Pine Grosbeak in the park.
Whereabouts in the park did you spot them?
I believe I may have caught a glimpse of a flock of them shortly after the dump of snow that we had recently. I was walking along Clearbrook trail and saw a flock of birds which just looked "odd" to me. They were making a sound I didn't recognize and can't repeat, and appeared to be slightly smaller than the average robin. Unfortunately they didn't hang around very long and I didn't have binoculars on me.

Dan, pine grosbeaks make a sort of clear but warbled whistle "wheddle wheebt" is the best I can describe even after thinking about it and editing my message.
