At 9:00 a.m. this morning, I was sitting at the table preparing a 10-page paper for Tuesday. At 10:00 a.m. this morning, I was looking through my binoculars at a pair of Bohemian Waxwings!! ;D ;D ;D How did such a remarkable change in environment come about?
When the sun came out about 9:00, I thought "I have to enjoy the beautiful day", what with the snow here and on the mountains, so I decided to go to Leary Park.
On my way, I found 2 Yellow-shafted flickers on McNaught Rd. One was an adult male, and the other one was either a female or an immature male (it looked like it had the beginnings of a red nape crescent). However, I would not classify them as pure, because their under-wings were orangy colour instead of yellow. How rare are these out here in the Valley, does anybody know?
They were on the side of a house, and this time I had my camera with me. However, I figured that I probably looked suspicious already what with looking at a house through binoculars--I didn't want to compound the suspicion with my photographing the house as well!!
Anyway, on First Ave, I noticed the mountains--incredibly beautiful. So I took a couple pictures.
Beautiful British Columbia--optimistic view
Beautiful British Columbia--pessimistic view
Upon arrival at Leary, I saw little until I got to the berry hedge at the north end of the park behind the baseball diamond. The American Robins were having a feast--plenty for this one!!
Then a different call alerted me to the presence of 2 Bohemian Waxwings!! ;D They were too far away for a picture, but I saw the rufous undertail coverts. They flew farther away and I took a look at an Oregon junco.
Then the Bohemian Waxwings put on a little show for me. They flew high over my head, doubled back past me again and then in a roundabout sort of way landed in the tree in front of me!
Need I say more?? Now back to my essay.
Jeff
P.S.--all this with my Mom's digital camera, not bad for a basic camera. Who needs an expensive camera when the birds come right to you??? (just kidding, I have no doubt that with a better camera the birds would have filled most of the frame!)
