My parents and I just got back this evening from the Interior. The river was packed with salmon, way more this year than in '06 when we first went. The smell of decomposing carcasses was almost everywhere . Those fish would have had to have gone through Hell's Gate to get there. Cheers!

Must have been an incredible sight. It is quite the journey those salmon make back to their spawning grounds and it is really amazing that they know the route!

Fish are certainly the lifeblood of our ecosystem in many ways.
I heard that the Alaskan volcano of 2008 might be the reason for the good returns this year. Apparently the ash falling in the ocean promoted exceptional plankton growth. Sockeye feed more on plankton while the other salmon such as Chinook, are more interested in eating smaller fish (herring, needlefish etc)
