While totally unrelated to birds, I thought some others would be interested in a sighting of the mammalian sort. About 10 days ago an immature bull moose was sighted on the road into Hicks Lake. Actually it was trotting along the road just beyond Trout Lake, which if you know it looks about as fine a moose habitat as you could find. There is no doubt about the identity, as the observer was within 10 meters of the animal at one point. Coincidentally, I had just heard about a moose sighting in Hope by a group of women out for a hike, the day before. Maybe the beginning of a trend?

That's interesting. I saw one last this past summer on a road trip about 50km west of Cranbrook. It was standing in a creek not far from the highway.

Murray, I know exactly the place you mention. What's funny is Ive said the same things in terms of good moose habitat.
Moose have certainly been moving southwards over the last years, although this is the first I've heard of one this close. There are some around the Coquihalla area. Poaching is tough on these guys though as the lazy people not wanting to travel north to hunt them legally go after the ones closer to home. The Roosevelt Elk herd from Chilliwack Lake area are gone now thanks to poaching.
Sorry to sour the post! Really nice to hear of that guy. I hope he does well. Ill let the Conservation Officers know of the sighting.

Sorry to hear about those Chilliwack Lake Elk being killed Gord. I wonder how the Ross Lake animals are holding up. It wasn't too long ago that I found their hoof-prints in the mud along the lower Skagit River.

Interesting, Murray.
I was driving Hwy 1 between Chilliwack and Hope a year or 2 ago and saw a moose stumble into the riparian while going by at 100 clicks. I remember thinking..."Did I just see what I thought I saw???" I mentioned it to a few others but let it be as a "well it sure looked like a moose, but here???"
Interesting to hear of this sighting.
Thanks for sharing,

I had no idea that Moose were around here. It's nice to know because if I see something that I believe might be a Moose I won't discredit it right away!
Instead of going into Alberta and eastern B.C. to see one I could have stayed here!

Hi- On October 4th I saw a cow moose on Landstrom Bar drinking water from the Fraser. It's the first one I've seen in the 18 years that we've lived in the Hope area. I couldn't find a government website to report the sighting.

Well Tony, it seems the evidence is starting to indicate that with your sighting and Dave's we may be getting closer to them becoming part of our local fauna. Let's hope so.

Tony, I have forwarded your (and Murray's) sighting to the Conservation Officer Service locally here. They'll be interested to hear of the sighting.
