With the return of Rufous H males my bird feeder has been busy and i wanted to get a shot. My feeder is off my deck which faces south east. I set my camera up just inside the door to the deck and hid myself from view. The camera settings were ISO 800 and I used a cable release because any movement detected my the Rufous would send it off. The first shot was taken with this set up around 5-6pm with the sun coming from behind the bird. The picture show lot of noise and the bird is not very sharp. Yesterday Ken P and I were talking about sharpness and he mentioned that reducing the ISO will improve the sharpness (just like grain in film). So yesterday around 12 noon I set the camera up slightly different, I set myself up on the deck in a chair with the camera in front of me. I had a cable release on it and added a 1.4 doubler to give me a little better reach. With ISO 400 I still could get 1000/s at f8 (to have some depth of field). By sitting still and using the cable release I could keep movement to a minimum. I also set the focus on manual and waited for the Rufous to show up. The rufous always reacted to the first 'click' by looking up but never took off. I just sat there clicking away. Here is a shot at ISA 400 and the noise is much better. The light was more to the left of the bird. As the spring summer progresses morning and evening sun will give me better shots and I may get the one I'm looking for. DaveP

I'm jealous, still waiting for my hummingbirds up here in the hills.
Nice shots

Nice shot Dave. The lower ISO really made a difference!
