A few good pictures? - Wow - I doubt I could produce that many excellent photos in an entire month.

As I posted, these are not only fantastic photographically, but you go out in the wind and cold and manage to find great subjects. Inspirational!

Nice stuff Len as always. I say that you're right on the gulls. The merlin is a pale bird too possibly a prairie sub species. That's the second light coloured one in as many weeks that have been photographed.

Long johns, 2 jackets, 2 sweaters and a good truck heater are the key ;D. I wasn't sure how the camera would work in sub freezing weather but it seemed to perform okay.

That's the second light coloured one in as many weeks that have been photographed. Thanks Gord. I was looking closely at the merlin also, after Rick Wright commented on Linda's photos. I have a picture of a few more merlins in my falcon file. lenjellicoe.zenfolio.com/p876256649 One was taken in Alberta but it is a back shot so not a good comparison. One is taken at Wilband and is a flight shot. This bird appears to be darker. Others are taken in Kamloops and Boundary Bay. I still am not convinced it is a prairie subspecies but not positive. Check out this wikipedia picture and you can see how light a prairie bird really is. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Falco_columbarius_Male.jpg (Probably have to copy and paste that truncated link) I would really like to get a good front shot of a prairie bird to compare.

Amazing pictures Len! I love the shots of the Common Goldeneye and the Snow Bunting. Hopefully, that was the end of the frigid temperatures.

Thanks Chris. I was hoping for some snow today for some pictures. Maybe tomorrow. I got a Belted Kingfisher at Wilband hunting in an unfrozen ditch. Just when I was wondering why it didn't go down the road to the creek where fishing had to be better, it caught a very small fish.

Anytime you want to go on a road trip to the prairies Len, count me in! It wont be this year I don't think Ken. If you ever want to get some prairie birds you might want to join the Edmonton naturalists at Brooks Alberta for the May long weekend. They camp there and count birds for 2 days. If you need any further info let me know.

Great stuff in the latest Journal Len! I love the Snow Bunting and the Merlin particularly. Setting the bar kinda high... Thank you Ian. I am envious of the GC Finches. Your pictures captured them well. I have been there about 5 times with no luck. I have even been there on days when they were seen.

Len, these pictures are fantastic. Beyond words, in fact. I love that Snow Bunting/blue backdrop photo. Top notch stuff there. As for the Merlin, I am caught in the middle. I like the branches but the 2 that infere with the bird are distracting...so I lean to the logged version. Then again, after the "I am retired" comment, maybe we could see that photo with most of the branches except the ones that pass behind the bird? Thanks for sharing your journal. Always exciting to look through! That Red-tailed Hawk/wings out/claws down also deserves a comment. Sharp images. Waiting for next weeks..... Dave Beeke

Dave Beeke[/quote] Thanks Dave. If you thought the elimination of branches with the Merlin was impressive you should have seen what I did with the power pole and the hawk ;D
