Hi everyone! Yesterday I went for a walk at Leary Park (Walden Rd, off of First Ave) and ended up being sure glad I took my binos along just in case. There was a male NORTHERN SHRIKE flying around the field. He kind of flew all over the field, perching in the small trees for a few minutes. It was a lifer for me, so I was understandably excited! ;D I forgot to add, I saw it at about 12:30 yesterday afternoon. It's worth checking out if you've never seen it before.

My neighbour has been telling me he has been seeing a Northern Shrike over in the developments beside Eagle Point Park. Today I walked over there and sure enough, there was a Northern Shrike. It was down close to the park where the house is under construction Kathy

Is that a new bird for the area Kathy?

No it isn't a new bird for the area. I've actually had one in my backyard in the past - that was a few years ago and I think it was year before last we had that hung around in our complex for a week or so, but it is a bird that we don't see every year. This particular bird seems to have claimed the development next door as it's area as my neighbour walks the area almost every day at a different time than I do and he has seen it a number of times - he even came and got me once to go back and see if it really was a shrike - but that time it had disappeared when we returned. My husband and I just returned from a walk looking for it but couldn't see it today - it is freezing out and snowing like crazy so maybe it was sheltered somewhere.
