I went back through my own 'archives' of Kathy's Korner Material and discovered my record of that other sighting...it was on April 25th, 2007....and I had noted that it was a 'brown' rabbit and not a pet rabbit that had been turned loose....that was the sighting by the viewing platform that I mentioned earlier.

I have a bit more data on the Harrison Mills Snowshoe Hare. We put out a monthly newsletter here in the complex and I write an article for it, so in the January issue I did an article on this 'Brown Bunny' and asked if anyone had seen it, or saw it, would they contact me. One owner whose place is along side the fence that divides River's Reach from Tapadera, said he saw a 'brown bunny' at his place several times last winter (2008/2009), but that it was always very shy. This would seem a logical spot for a rabbit to be as I think, last year, the lots on the River's Reach side of the fence had a few years growth of natural vegetation on them, so a rabbit could work it's way up from the park, through this vegetation, undetected. That isn't the case now as both the lots and the common area beside the park have been 'prettyfied'.
Today another owner told me that they had had a 'brown bunny' in the back of their lot a number of times two winters ago...now they live on the opposite side of the park and their lot backs onto completely natural land that backs onto the estuary itself...they said that when they had seen this rabbit a few times (and it was always very skittish and could really move in huge bounds), they actually looked it up and came to the conclusion that was a Snowshoe Hare, from the description in their reference book. One of the deciding factors was that this particualar Hare, according to their book, when it was chewing on brush...made a diagonal cut and she said that the young trees that this Hare was helping itself to had made a perfect diagonal cut, just like someone had pruned them.
She has also sent me some pictures of some tracks they found in the back of their property back in December's snowfall. Unfortunately they aren't really close and had melted a bit when the picture was taken, but I'm going to send them to Gord and let him decide if it is worth posting them.
