Yes, it can get a bit unnerving. We were looking for the White-collared Seedeater at San Ignatio, along the bank of the Rio Grande, when one of our group saw this guy swim up to the bank, climb out and walk up toward him. Naturally our friend was a bit nervous, but the guy just said, Don't mind me, I'm only going to work, and kept walking up toward the town.
We had planned to bird around the Falcon Dam, too, but were told there were so many security issues there and things were so tight, there was no point in going into that area.
What was also unnerving was birding at the mouth of the Tijuana River south of San Diego, within about a mile of the Mexican border, with military helicopters regularly circling overhead, border guards in pickup trucks sitting at various places keeping an eye on us, etc.
Great to hear that Thor and Len and Dian are getting some very good species, including a lot that we had no chance for, being we were in Arizona in August.
