Hi fellow birders. This morning I tried for the 5th time to find the Slaty-backed Gull first reported on the Abbotsford CBC. It was at the Transfer Station on Industrial way this a.m. and I had good bino and scope looks at it. It was likely among the hundreds of gull all along but sometimes many of them are inside the large building on the piles of garbage. The flocks get driven out by large machines from time to time. It has also been reported on the roof of the building. It is very evident with its dark mantle and stands out. It is not just a darker backed GW or Herring Gull. Thanks Gord for you ID information. It was just as you said. Good birding, John Vooys, abbotsford

Congrats, John!
I had a brief look yesterday but did not see it. I wouldnt put much weight on that as there was a lot of gulls inside the building and flying around. I think putting in a little time will generate results!

I went to try and see the SBGU (2nd try). After a while the gulls settled down and I saw the SBGU on the peak of the roof. Thanks Stan for the directions.

My apologies I should have mentioned that I went on Sunday afternoon around 1:30 pm ... finally saw the bird around 2:15 pm.

Report of this guy and great photos from yesterday (Jan 21) and was also there in the field and pond Monday (Jan 19)
The field and pond it has been seen at is on Highway 11 (Sumas Way) on the left if going south. It is not quite 1km from Highway #1. If you go past the auto wreckers, you've gone too far but will have to drive past the area to turn around. Part of the pond goes in behind a house but all can be easily seen from the road and they are quite close.

Ilya, thanks for the update! Glad you got to see this guy too.
Hope to run into you again at the Bay later this year or if you come our way again to chase something (would it be greedy to hope we find something good again soon?) ;D

It was there this morning on the roof of the transfer station basking in the sun. He looks like he might be starting to moult his streaks a little to get his all white head and neck for breeding season!

Hello Birders, The Slaty-backed Gull was at the transfer station in Abbotsford again this morning, Feb. 10. I arrived around 10am, and around 10:30 the bird seemed to come from nowhere and it was there when I left about 30 minutes later, still sitting on the roof of the building. Thanks for the continuing updates as I join the extending list of birders who owe their life Slaty-backed Gull to Gord's eyes. Dave Beeke
