Stan: Wow, what a run!!. Maybe, as you say, it is laying low, trying to stay cool. I wouldn't think there would be a need to apologize to anyone! Considering how long the bird has been coming to your feeders, how generous you and your wife have been to allow birders to come into your backyard, and how faithful you have been in posting updates, all I can say is well done. I think, if it way my place, my wife would have erected a ten foot fence by now; ( hope she doesen't read this!! ) Cheers, Thor Manson
Hope, B.C. - with a flock of Black Swifts circling not too high over my backyard deck.

Looks like we're building on this record!
I think this is the first multi-day sighting, never mind over a month!
Hope Len gets back in time.

Thanks for thinking of me Gord. Got back yesterday. Phoned Stan and will try for the Goldfinch Tuesday. For my trip I don't have much to add to my list that I didn't mention in my last message. We did get Rose Breasted Grosbeak and Common Grackles at Swan Lake on the BC/Alberta border. Visited Mc Queens Slough in Dawson Creek. A great birdy place but nothing unusual there. Three-toed Woodpeckers and Upland Sandpipers at Liard Hotsprings. Trip total was 198 birds and lifers still stands at 5. Some more memories below including Murrays Buffalo which put on a show as he head butted the dust pile. Great photos from Cheam Gord....

Len, welcome home. Beautiful shots from your trip! Thanks for sharing as you went along. I enjoyed it.
Sounds like you'll have a good chance for the goldfinch. It was seen again today!! Good luck!

I have also had the Lesser Goldfinch to my feeder ....they have a bit of a piercing call that I thought resembled a Red Wing Black bird but not as loud.......The last i seen him was on Sunday but he has been there before that this month.....I live around the Delair area.......

Sandy, your report has certainly caught my attention!!
The Delair area, if you mean near Delair Park, is a bit of a haul from Stan's place. That's just east of Sumas Way and Stan is right next to Clearbrook Rd. A bird could probably fly it in 10 minutes. But I find it hard to believe that it would alternate between your place and Stan's when it comes fairly regularly to his feeders.
Get snapping with your camera and take notes at what time you see it. We just might have a second rarity in the area! A photo might show a different bird and if you see it during a time when Stan sees it, then we'll have a pretty incredible thing going on out our way here!
Eagerly await your next report!

Hi Gord,
Yes i will try and get a pic of this guy if i can.....I have seen him probably in the last 2 weeks about 5-6 times.......last time was on Sunday afternoon around 4:00 p.m. or so.....He caught my attention the first time from the sound i heard of him in the tree and it was unusual to anything i had been hearing in my backyard....when i seen him at the feeder, I thought at first he was a "defect" goldfinch!!.....then looked him up in the book and concluded it was the Lesser goldfinch....then seen Stan's photo to confirm the same was at my feeder....I am just up from Delair Park, in the Winfield Drive loop.....so that would be a bit of a travel from Clearbrook Rd. to here for sure.....I will keep updating here if i can manage to get a photo of him .......hope he returns again....

Update for Thursday, July 24 -- We saw the Lesser Goldfinch five times today between 10:30 and 6:30. Once he was immediately driven off by one of the three American Goldfinch males now frequenting the feeders along with several females and juveniles. Other times he was alone and stayed at the feeder for several minutes.

Update for Saturday, July 26.
Two Calgary birders saw the Lesser Goldfinch three times yesterday morning and we saw him a couple of times later in the day. Other birders saw him today around 1:00, and we saw him about 40 minutes later. We weren't watching most of the day.

You can add Lesser Goldfinch to the August list. We saw it 6 or 7 times on July 30, didn't see it at all on July 31, but on August 1 we saw it in the early afternoon and again in the evening.

Sunday update - Four birders saw the Lesser Goldfinch this morning shortly before noon (two of them had arrived around 9:00), and a Calgary birder saw it this afternoon about 3:15. We saw it this evening after 8:30, also.

Wow, what a run! At this rate, most of Canada will have had a chance to see it!

Hi and welcome Hannahsmom! Glad you had the fortune to see the little guy in your own yard. Out of curiosity, where abouts in Abbotsford? No need to provide specific addresses or anything. There are suspicions there might be a second Lesser Goldfinch in the area. Thanks for sharing your sighting!!
