Hi Fraser Valley Birders:
Yesterday, I had an exhausting day chasing the Lesser Black Backed Gull reported from the Okanagan. Russell Cannings had organized a gull survey from the southern Okanagan to Vernon, so the search for the LBBG was part of that. I arrived at my designated search spot at the mouth of Powers Creek in Westbank by 8:30. No gull. I won't bore everyone with all the driving around that was done that day. Mac Placido, and Don Cecile were searching at various spots around Vernon, and I eventually joined them. I happened to be there when the bird was reported at Shannon Lake back in Westbank. I drove there to find a groups of gulls loafing in the middle of the lake, but no LBBG. In a last attempt, I checked the mouth of Powers Creek again, and found the bird there at the end of the day. Whew, what a day!! Today's search for the Ivory Gull was a piece of cake comparatively. Great fun!! Cheers, Thor
