Hi For the last month we have been seeing and mostly hearing large hawks living in our back woods. When we see them, they were spiralling in the sky and calling or flying into and out of the woods. The calling became more frequent over the last several days. On Friday morning around 5am, we heard continuous, very loud, calling from our back woods and it lasted for about an hour. About 6 am the calling stopped and we did not hear or see the hawks for the rest of Friday and on Saturday. We suspect the commotion may have been fledglings leaving the nest. The hawks returned yesterday but the calling was less. One has a gray underside while the other is more brown. I tried searching the sound files on 'allaboutbirds' and Stokes field guide bird calls but cannot find a match. This morning I recorded a video with the call on my iPhone. We would love to get an identification. Happy Birding Mike Hawk Call by Imperial Birders, on Flickr

Sounds like a young Cooper's Hawk to me. Osprey a sensible guess given they nested near by and are also quite vocal.

Thanks Ben and Gord They are not Osprey. They are too large for Cooper's and they are not harassing our back yard birds. I thought I saw the white tail ring of a Harrier but the light was not right to be sure. The calls occur frequently during the day so we know they have taken residence here for at least the past month. The hawk we saw this morning had a light greyish underbelly, almost white. We stood watching the woods and listening this morning and the calls were coming from a large cedar tree near the swamp. Some Jays appeared to be making a commotion in the tree from where the calls were coming. The hawks fly though our yard so fast that they are difficult to identify. We will keep watching and hopefully get a good look. Hope you are enjoying this nice weather birding
Mike
