It's been quite a while since I posted anything and I thought I'd try to be more active again...so here are a couple of sightings from my outing to Iona yesterday, which included five lifers (they're pretty easy to get when you are so new to birding! ;D) Unfortunately I didn't do very well on getting photos, except for the shots below....
This Golden-crowned Kinglet was much more cooperative than the Ruby-crowned Kinglet I'd seen earlier in the day, but still was mostly behind branches...
And the highlight of my day was the Lapland Longspur! I'd seen a bird I thought might have been one, but it was scared off by some joggers. I'd almost given up all hope of getting another chance, however shortly before I reached the end of the jetty, I had a great view of this one...
I also saw lots of Surf Scoters and Ring-billed Gulls (and I'm sure there were other gulls too, but they were all so far away I was having a tough time getting a good enough view to id them), a few Great Blue Herons, quite a few Double-crested Cormorants, oodles of Savannah Sparrows, several Song Sparrows, a group of 8 Sandlerings, a Horned Grebe, one Ruby-crowned Kinglet, two (or the same one twice) Golden-crowned Kinglets, and at least one Lapland Longspur. Apparently there was also a Horned Lark, which I unfortunately did not see.
I didn't have time or energy to check out the ponds, though as I drove in I could see there were a lot of birds out there...I like to think they were all Mallards so I didn't miss much. ;D ;D
