My parents and I spent a couple of days near, and on, Cape Breton Island recently. During this time, I was able to fit some birding in. My main target species were Piping plover and Nelson's sparrow. While taking in the 18th-century French fortress of Louisbourg, I got my lifer Common eiders: Common eider by Joel Schmidt, on Flickr On our way back to our campsite, I scoped the nearby ocean and shore from a pullout along the main road leading to the fortress. Here, I saw my lifer Black guillemots. At the Big Glace Bay Lake Bird Sanctuary near Sydney, I searched fruitlessly for PIPL along the main beach. After giving up and starting to head back in the direction of the vehicle, I just happened to look towards the water's edge and there one was : Piping plover by Joel Schmidt, on Flickr It was cool being able to read the bird's tag later on. Also saw a Willet here was well. They sure look different on the East Coast: Willet by Joel Schmidt, on Flickr Right before my parents and I left, I heard the distinctive hissing song of a Nelson's sparrow. After some scanning with bins, I finally spotted the bird singing from some low bushes, about a minute before it flew off and disappeared. This was my fourth lifer that day! Stay tuned for Newfoundland.

I am heading out that way in late August. With what you got, it seems more promising!
