June 2022 Challenge

Later June can start to get a bit slow for birding once nesting is is full force, but given the late start to summer, June might be better than some years. June is a good month to check out higher elevation areas such as our mountain hikes such as Elk Mountain, or to take a drive up to Boston Bar or Manning Park.

Sorry for getting it going late. Let's see how we do this month. Ive put what I have seen this month. My favourite for June is the Dusky Flycatcher; not always one to get past May.

From Strawberry Flats today, a pair of Cassin's Finch were present and a Canada Jay that can be added.

Thanks for the additions. I also have Red Crossbill as my favourite addition. I've not run into them lately but there was a small flock at Island 22 yesterday and a pair near Browne Creek Wetlands as well. American Redstart and Great Horned Owl from East Sector Park as well.

And Ken's Northern Waterthrushes! Great find.

I actually saw my first Red Crossbill of the year yesterday too. I wonder why they weren't in the valley earlier (or didn't seem to be)...

Had two young Barred Owl calling at the Chilliwack Community Forest. It's an enjoyable walk.

Well, I've been about as lazy as possible this month. Sorry all and sorry to those who have contributed.

Chris, good to add the Barred Owls. I was able to add Great Horned Owl from East Sector park.

Ken, the Ruby-crowned Kinglet not regular in summer in our area. There's the odd summer record Manning Park. Just worth a double check on that one.

A few other notables
Caspian Tern flying over my house a few nights ago squawking like they know how. Had I not heard Jon's recordings of night time terns, I would have been more shocked than I was.

Swainson's Hawk that's hanging around Gibson Road area near the highway. I've not seen it last couple days.

Ruffed Grouse, Virgina Rail and Sora (had both calling same time!) also from East Sector Park.

Northern Harrier, not overly common in the summer, was a female we spotted while looking at the Chat.

We're missing some Manning Park birds if anyone has been that way.

Marsh Wren sure is not common as they used to be, but I'm sure they're still easy to get at Willband? Not one at Cheam Lake this year.
