I went for a loop around the Hope Airport today before heading to the sewage ponds. Neither spot was very birdy. Just past the weather station, I came across what seemed to be an injured Mouring Dove. It was on the ground on the gravel road before the Soaring Club buildings. I stopped and called Elizabeth’s Wildlife Rescue to see if they’d take it. I was rummaging in my vehicle trying to clear out a small bin to put the bird in, and when I looked up, it was gone. It had been favouring one leg, holding its right foot up off the ground. In the time I watched it, it barely moved at all. It was all fluffed up, and looked pretty rough. I figure it may have hobbled off the path into the weeds in the small slope down to the road. I took a few minutes to look through the weeds, but I was unable to locate it. My hope is that it flew off, and it will be okay, but my guess is that it hid in the weeds, and will soon be found by a predator. Such is nature, I suppose, but it would have been nice if the story had a nicer ending.
