While taking out the garbage and green waste bins I found a Eurasion Collared-Dove eating seeds that had fallen from the evergreens onto the pavement. While I was watching him I could hear a flycatcher, but, which one, I can't recognise them from their calls. Got My phone and started a checklist and started searching down the flycatcher, found a Hammond's in the nieghbours yard and backed up by Sound ID and the peek and peer. Well, now I am wandering around the neighourhood in a sweatsuit and slippers, better do a full list. Returning to the back yard I found a Chipping sparrow in the Oak trees that are just leafing now, it was very hard to see and was considering not listing it. I got a coffee and My phone mike and sat on the deck. Almost as soon as I sat a Chipping Sparrow landed on a low close branch and started singing, another joined it from the next yard, then another from the other side of our yard. They carried on for 5 minutes and then were gone. I made a poor recording of the Chipping Sparrows singing competition, attached to ebird checklist. ebird.org/checklist/S110480641Salish Pond had a lot of babies but was just a spot to wait for My Wife's medical appointment. Cheam had a lot of good birds for Me, but I spent most of My time chasing the sound of an American Redstart. I made recording after recording and compared the waveforms to Merlin sound files. I finally got some that I could hear and compare to the sound files. And eventually I could pick out the Redstart from all the background birds. First picked up By Merlin Sound ID from the Parking lot viewing platform, recorded multiple times on the beginning of the Loop Trail, seen just before the trail goes into the timber. ebird.org/checklist/S110539341Ken in Hope

Sounds like you had a good day! Nice job getting some sound recordings uploaded. One thing to remember is to trim the beginning and end of the recording to about 2 seconds before/after the call. Otherwise we wait 17 seconds before hearing a Chipping sparrow Your Redstart has me wondering if it's a Yellow Warbler. What do you think?

There are Yellow Warblers on both of the recordings and waveforms are somewhat similar, but I believe what I am looking at is a very close match to Redstart sound files. I did eventually see a Redstart.
As for clipping the recordings, I think I was following ebird guidelines as to not clip to provide context. I do agree that clipping them for others to verify makes sense. Which means I need to look at how I can modify WAV files. What software do people use?
