The day ended well on Sumas Central Road barely 1km west of Evans Road. I stopped by and saw about 80 plovers quite far out. I balanced my scope on the window sill for a look and spotted a golden plover. The weather wasn't nice and it was hard without a tripod so I went home to get the boys and a tripod. The weather much worse but looked to be breaking to the west so we checked a couple ponds on Adams Road and found another flock of Black-bellied Plover and, in another pond, three Dunlin with a bunch of Least Sandpiper. _0221532 by Geordie LaForge, on Flickr _0221533 by Geordie LaForge, on Flickr We didn't like the looks of the clouds coming behind the brief break so we rushed back to Sumas Central and set up the scope to confirm the species of golden plover. The rain moves quickly and it wasn't long before it was pouring again while I was trying to find the plover that caught my eye earlier. There were subtle dips in the field and the birds kept coming in and out of sight in small groups. Finally it showed and we all got a look between it going out of sight for a minute or two. Beautiful female bird and quite distinct. I've never seen one in breeding colours before; a real treat. Lifers for Benny and Jamie and only my second for the Fraser Valley.
