Larry and I did a little excursion across the line, last Thursday. I had been a little worried about being rained on, but fortunately it let up by the time we got to the water. Not having been to this area for anything before, I initially mistook White Rock for Bellingham when I first saw it. The first place we stopped at was Drayton Harbor. We were pleasantly surprised to see shorebirds only a stone's throw from the road; mostly Dunlins with some Western sandpipers, Whimbrels, and a handful of BB plovers mixed in. We didn't even have to step out of the car to see them: Whimbrel by Joel Schmidt, on Flickr Black-bellied plover by Joel Schmidt, on Flickr Our main target for the day was Black scoter, the first of which we spotted at Semiahmoo Spit amongst huge rafts of Surf scoters, WW scoters, and Greater scaups. This was my first BLSC sighting in five years . One of 3 additional Black scoters that we found at Birch Bay State Park: Black scoter & Common goldeneye by Joel Schmidt, on Flickr It was so nice being able to finally visit the States after 2 long years.
