Yesterday we drove up to Manning Park just to see what we could see. Stopped at the Nature Path Area just before you start up the hill to Rhodo Flats (sorry can't remember the name - it was still closed - we had to park at the gate and walk in). Lots of bird activity...saw Ruby Crowned Kinglets, Yellow Rump Warblers, Varied Thrush, Robins (with nesting material), Townsends Solitaire etc. Then went to Lightning Lakes. There was still a lot more snow in that area than we had expected and it snowed on us the whole time we were there. Duck Lake was open but didn't see anything on it...there were some Juncos on the open areas of ground and one female Goldeneye on a pond a little lower down. Lightning Lakes were still frozen but there were some open areas of grass and I counted approximately 70 Robins in this area, all looking miserable while snow pellets fell on them. There were also some Gray Jays which were eager to share our lunch. The Beaver Pond access was blocked (they are logging all along the sides of the road) so couldn't get in there. The snow virtually disappears as soon as you get east of the lodge. Mule Deer campsite was open...saw a male Harlequin Duck, more Ruby Crowned Kinglets, Robins, and a pair of Gold Crowned Sparrows. Would have loved to have been able to bring the trailer and just sit in that campsite for a week or so....I am sure you would see all kinds of interesting activity. Kathy

Beautiful Harlequin!! Good shot of the solitare too, a species that's never cooperated for me!
I dont like hearing that it's still snowing...a little scary.
