Yesterday, Larry, John Vooys, John Gordon, and I headed out to Manning for October's Global Big Day. Thankfully, the weather turned out to be much better than we had expected. At Allison Pass, we were surprised to see a Belted kingfisher fly over. The first highlight of the day was at Strawberry Flats, in the form of an American three-toed woodpecker. Lightning Lake had some good birds. In addition to a Western meadowlark, a Surf scoter, and a pair of Snow geese, we also saw a Pacific loon: Pacific loon by Joel Schmidt, on Flickr On the road up to the alpine meadows, we enjoyed great views of a Sooty grouse: Sooty grouse by Joel Schmidt, on Flickr An unexpected surprise, further up the road, was a large number of White-winged crossbills. One of them: White-winged crossbill (female) by Joel Schmidt, on Flickr The view from the Cascade Lookout is always really nice: Early snow by Joel Schmidt, on Flickr By the end of the day, we had 28 species in total, several of which were year birds for some of us.
