I saw a Great Egret on Vedder Canal this morning at 7:45am. It flew into a riverside shrub on the West side of the canal, at about .5k from the freeway bridge. I access the area from the Bailey Bridge.

I access the area from the Bailey Bridge. Nice find Ed. We drove over that bridge today. I guess we should have checked it out but we were on our way to find Jamie's Least Flycatcher at GBH Reserve. We found it and heard the Great Horned Owl.

We enjoyed some great looks of it and also other birds who were quite active despite the hot weather. We parked at the corner of Boundary and #2 Rd and walked the west side of the canal. It’s about 500m down from Keith Wilson Bridge now. Nice one, Ed!

I’m watching it right now. What a beautiful bird, and a very successful hunter as well. Its crop is so full of small fish that it’s having a hard time getting any more down!

Glad you got to see it as well. It is a very good hunter we also saw it catch a lot of small fish. It was easy to see when it caught a salmonid as that catch would go right down. But a stickleback required a bit more work. The extended spines can be seen in the photo. 021_5251 by Geordie LaForge, on Flickr Flying by. A blue heron was what we think spooked it but a fellow on a bike that came at the same time might have been a bit much for it too. 021_5194 by Geordie LaForge, on Flickr 021_5266 by Geordie LaForge, on Flickr It was pretty tolerant of users (other than perhaps bikes). 021_5275 by Geordie LaForge, on Flickr 021_5216 by Geordie LaForge, on Flickr 021_5263 by Geordie LaForge, on Flickr There were a few Lazuli Buntings including a male right at the dyke that we all got a great look at even the little two year old was amazed at the colours! There was also a House Wren, family of Bullock's Oriole, an Eastern Kingbird and from across the canal, probably in Cook's Marsh, we heard a Sora! 021_5175 by Geordie LaForge, on Flickr

Great shots. I’m glad it’s staying in the area.

Still there as of 8:15 this morning. It was about 150m north of the Keith Wilson bridge in a tree facing the dyke.
I got pics which I'll post later.

Nice running into you Jamie this morning, I guess I should have followed behind you instead of leaving.

GREG was still present this evening around 5pm, north of the Keith Wilson bridge on the East side of the canal. Best viewed from the walking dyke on the West side of the canal.

Hi Birders
Thanks to Ed for finding the Great Egret and to Jamie for the Least Flycather. Had very good views of both birds today, early this afternoon. Both birds were in the same general areas where they were first located.
Nice work, guys!
