Yesterday after the big windstorm I wondered if anything interesting would be on Kawkawa Lake. It was surprisingly quiet, but tucked away at a far corner out of the wind was a raft of waterfowl. The scope disclosed it was mostly Surf Scoter with a few Bufflehead and a single Lesser Scaup. I counted twice and got 76! By far the most I've ever seen in the Fraser Valley. An early morning visit to Hope Airport was nice. A pair of Bullock's Oriole. The male was busy preening while the female caught several small caterpillars. 021_4783 by Gord G, on Flickr 021_4798 by Gord G, on Flickr A Northern Harrier flew over. Not an overly common sight later on in spring. 021_4802 by Gord G, on Flickr A Hutton's Vireo was also here. This is about as far east that I'm aware of any records for the species.

These are possibly the same birds we saw on the Fraser opposite Matsqui Trail [Page Rd] on Tues 18th. They were floating downstream at that time!
