Yesterday I went by the Quadling Quarry to check on the Cliff Swallows and Peregrine Falcon situation. Just as I arrived a PEFA flew across the rock face. That was good. However I did not see one Cliff Swallow. Has anyone seen them this year? As I was standing in the parking area a foreman from the quarry asked me if I wanted to see the new peregrine nest. He told me two boxes were put up on the cliff face, one just west of the original nest site and one on No3 Rd. The falcons have made a new nest on the cliff ledge (viewable from just before the bridge) and use the box as a perch to survey their domain. He also told me that the box on No3 Road also had a peregrine visiting it although it may be the same bird. He tells me that there are other swallow nests in other parts of the quarry but I didn't have time to check. Sadly the end of Quadling Rd which used to have a number of Lazuli Bunting is now a non-stop highway for garbage trucks every five minutes. Dust and noise and fumes, how residents can live there is beyond belief. Sadly the Fraser Valley and environs is being slowly but surely bing infilled, razed and spoilt. A terrible shame.

John
Henry Wall posted pics of the Cliff Swallows nesting at Quadling a day or two ago! A question about the 2nd Peregrine nest platform at No3 Rd. Where exactly is this since #3 does not extend past the River as far as I know!!

Hi Bert, No 3 is the turn-off at the Freeway and McDonald Park on north end of No3. Look up on the cliffs. A scope is needed. So glad the swallows are back. Possibly when I was there they were out foraging. John Gordon (JOGO)

Hey Bert: I posted some pictures of the "Replacement Peregrine Platforms" on Mar 31. If you go back a few pages here you can see them. The one that is closest to the quarry, can be seen from North Parallel above the waterfall between the two quarries. As you drive along North Parallel, just past the blueberry field and the house, there is a parking spot for the walk along the dyke. Park just a little past there and look above the waterfall. The one in McDonald Park (at the north end of No 3 Rd) is at the east end of the park. Look up between the trees at the rock bluff across the slough. The McDonald Park one is not easy to find, but if you use my pictures as a guide, it should help. Look for a vertical crack between the rock faces and you should narrow down where it is. Good luck, Klaus

I went to check on the story that the nesting platforms were being used. This is a picture of the waterfall platform that is easy to see: DSCF6589 by Klaus Molthagen, on Flickr I should clarify that at McDonald Park, there are three rock faces to check. The nest box is on the left hand one, beside a tree, in the middle of the face. Here is a picture that I took from in front of the house on No. 3 Rd: DSCF6592 by Klaus Molthagen, on Flickr As I said, it is not as easy to find, but look for the tree and the grass shelf. I hope this helps a bit. As I thought, the Falcons use of the platforms is a little optimistic. Klaus
