I dropped my parents off at the airport the other afternoon, and couldn't resist stopping at Iona to see if any surprises were lurking around. It didn't seem to far off track to check Blackie Spit either It was low tide and late in the day, not really favorable conditions, but I did pick up a few shorebirds nonetheless. I saw 43 species in a few hours, so I am considering it as an afternoon of successful "brief" stops. Pectoral Sandpiper at Iona (I saw two in the NW pond) In case you need more field marks for identification, here is this picture as well. Also in the pond were 3 species of teal, as well as many other ducks (Lots of shovelers) A brief stroll through the outer pond marshes showed at least a dozen Yellow-headed Blackbirds, as well as a Yellow Warbler among the common species. Shorebirds of Blackie Spit included Western Sandpiper, Dunlin!, Whimbrel, and Short-billed Dowitcher. Western Sandpiper Juvenile Dunlin (Kind of late to hang around? ) Whimbrel Anyway, a beautiful, sunny afternoon in Vancouver! DB

Good pics Dave! Some great birds you got. I would have thought that dunlin was a little late as well.
Nothing better than a quick buzz around some birdy areas out there!! The hard part is finding excuses to battle traffic and ridiculous gas prices to be in the area in the first place. Maybe we should start a topic to gather ideas on the above stated problems...
