I encountered a strange loon on Kootenay Lake this week. I suspect a bird that has partially molted into its winter plumage (possibly Pacific). Here's a link to my ebird entry with some blurry photos (and a poor sketch). Any thoughts?

Paul, my first thought when seeing your photos was Pacific Loon. Not expected in your neck of the woods?

Looks like a chickadee's head on a loon to me Some of the images look like a quite different from each other... Which is more accurate? The browner, or black and white head?

Hey Jon, the Black and White is more accurate (or dark gray and white). Discoloration is one thing that comes from not using a real camera.
Gord, we seem to get a few in the region in the fall and winter. This would be my first, if it's a Pacific.
