Went for a drive to Venables Valley on Sept 18. Amongst others, I saw Redpoll, Merlin, Coots, Ring Necked, Widgeon, and this unusual Red Tail Hawk. DSCF5378 by Klaus Molthagen, on Flickr From my perspective, the colors are wrong for a Red Tail. So I waited, took a few pictures, and was lucky to get some usable ones when it flew off. DSCF5379 by Klaus Molthagen, on Flickr I can tell it is a Red Tail Hawk because it has the black fingers on the wing tips, and the black patagial marks on the front of the wings, and the dark belly band. If it had not flown off and managing to get pictures, I would not know which hawk it was. Nothing like keeping on your toes. Klaus

Red-tailed Hawk variation is amazing. We have dozens of red-tailed hawks in the farm fields here now, and it seems that every few days I find a puzzling individual that doesn't seem right but ends up being a red-tailed hawk after all.
