Went with Larry and Ed up Flatiron last Wednesday. After finding almost nothing, we crossed paths with an active mixed flock of warblers, CB chickadees, and a GC kinglet. The biggest surprise however, was a pair of Boreal chickadees. Unfortunately, I couldn't tell them apart from the Chestnut-backs because of the lighting. Right at the treeline, Ed accidentally flushed a Sooty grouse. Instead of disappearing into the forest right away, the bird stood on a rock next to the trail, clucking away. Sooty grouse by Joel Schmidt, on Flickr After thoroughly searching the lake area and summit for ptarmigan, we were ready to admit defeat. As we were heading down, I noticed a head poking up between two rocks. Two or three steps later, we stumbled upon a male and a female . Great list and nice photos Joel. The hike is especially worthwhile when you see Ptarmigan.

Well done guys. Too bad we couldn't have a group hike like we did before. It was a lot of fun. I especially miss paulos and his music lyric quizzes. One day again we'll get the gang together.

Nice report! My desktop background is a picture from the top of flatiron. I'm sure I'll try to be back for the hike again one day...
